Stoughton Area School District Promotes Literacy with Reading Rooms and Plenty of Books

Reading rooms, more books help promote literacy. (Stoughton Courier-Hub, 11/28/2011)

Excerpt: At River Bluff Middle School, it’s a little akin to a fire drill for bookworms.
Every day for 10 minutes, students undergo "DEAR" - Drop Everything and Read. They stop what they are doing and read a book, usually around lunchtime.

It’s one of the ways that schools in the Stoughton Area School District are promoting literacy, one of the district's key initiatives this year.

The middle school is also asking for the community to donate books so teachers can beef up their holdings in the individual classrooms. Kegonsa Elementary School, meanwhile, has joined Fox Prairie Elementary School to create its own reading room, appointed with comfy beanbag chairs to create a quiet sanctuary for bibliophiles.

Excerpt: So, what to do? Some brief thoughts:

However much community leaders are pushing reading, it's not enough. We need more mobilization from educators, politicians, pastors and civic leaders around reading.

As for parents, far too many are poor allies of their children's reading skills. More needs to be done to reach them and teach them. Parents, turn off the television a lot more often and read more yourself - it's great modeling for your kids, especially matched with reading aloud to younger kids.
