On January 1st, L'Orangerie is the only game in town, i.e. the only major museum open to the public. Its collection includes works by Cezanne, Renoir, Picasso, and Matisse, plus 8 of Monet's huge water lily canvases displayed in two large ovals rooms.
The big surprise of the day was the relatively short wait we had to enter L'Orangeries -- 45 minutes -- on a day, the first Sunday of the month, when admission to Paris museums is free.
Today's discovery. Chaim Soutine.
