The inevitable has arrived. Steve Jobs is leaving Apple as CEO.
(CNN) -- It's a moment many tech fans hoped never would come: Steve Jobs' resignation from the helm of Apple, which he co-founded from his family garage in 1976.
As that news hit early Wednesday evening on the East Coast, people rushed to online social networks to mourn the apparent end of Jobs' career; talk about what this means for the future of Apple products like the iPhone; and wish him good health.
"The end of an era!" one Twitter user wrote.
"I pray it's not bc (because) of his health," said another.

A different kind of Bearings
I'm supposed to talk about bearings, of the hardware type like those in the image, but a different kind of bearings came to mind after a girlfriend's call. This girlfriend has just signed up for her company's treasure hunt. This year, they'll be heading south with Malacca as the destination. Last year, they headed east to Kuantan and the year before that, it was north, Lumut. So far, her team (usually of 4) has not won any prize yet. Hope they win something this year.
I haven't tried treasure hunting but another girlfriend who has joined several open treasure hunts earlier never tires of it. The ability to read maps, a keen sense of observation and a quick mind could be winning factors, I think, as they help in you getting your bearings right in an unfamiliar environment.
Talk about bearings, I once took a wrong turn coming out of Nilai, a town south of KL, and had to drive all the way to Seremban on the North-South Expressway because there is no allowance for a U-turn along that stretch of the highway. It was way past midnight when I got home. (Seremban is some 40 miles south of Kuala Lumpur which is usually an hour's drive.) That kind of explains why I haven't tried treasure hunting. LOL!

GPS for Bikers, the Zumo 665
More and more people are installing GPS into their vehicle and I am talking about here in Malaysia. Though they may not be cheap gadgets to own, they are useful especially for people who often travel to unfamiliar places either for leisure or for work. Do you have one in your car too?
There are even GPS specially made for motorcycles. One popular biker GPS model is the zumo 665. Among other features, this motorcycle-friendly navigator is equipped with stereo Bluetooth and XM satellite radio. Featuring a bright 4.3" touchscreen color display, the zumo 665 puts all the information you need in an easy-to-read format as you travel down the road. It also has a glove-friendly intuitive interface that makes entering information as easy as shifting gears.
Happy biking!

Sell Your Free Cell Phone For Cash
You were smart about where you bought your new cell phone and got a state-of-the-art smartphone for free with your service order. You didn’t pay more for service because you know those plans are the same price no matter where you get them. It’s the price of the phone that varies from store to store.
Now your contract has expired and it’s a good time to upgrade to a newer model phone. Once again, you want to shop around and get the one you want free or at a deeply discounted price. But, what about that phone that just came off contract? What are you going to do with it?
Most people toss their old cell phones in a drawer, figuring they’re too good to throw in the trash and might be useful someday. We’ll at least they don’t go in the trash. There are materials inside those phones that become toxic when they decay in the environment. But once in the drawer, a cell phone rarely goes back into service. Hey, it was a free phone so who cares? It’s not worth anything, right?
Nothing could be further from the truth. Just because YOU didn’t pay for the phone doesn’t mean it has a lower value. That marvel of technology may have cost hundreds of dollars to manufacture. You took good care if it and everything works just as well as it did a couple of years ago when it was new. That gadget has residual value that you can extract, once again because you are smart.
Here’s the smart thing to do with a free phone that has just come off of contract. Move as fast as you can to sell your cellphone for cash online. Technology has a limited shelf life. The older it gets, the less it is worth. The very best you can do is sell your unwanted phone immediately after you are done using it. Pocket the cash and use it for whatever you want. After all, you’re getting your new phone free too.
It’s an easy process. All you have to do is look up the particular make and model phone you have, check a few boxes about the condition of the device and what accessories you still have, and request an offer. You’ll get an instant online offer for your phone. If you like what you see, then click through and request a postage paid shipping box so you can send it in at no cost to you. Once your phone has been checked out, you’ll get a check in the mail. Mmmm. Money in the mailbox for something you didn’t pay for. Does it get any sweeter that this?
What about new phones that never went into service? You got a holiday or birthday present from a well-meaning relative, but you have no use for this thing. You don’t want to pay for a contract to put it into service. What to do?
A simple “thank you” will suffice. Then, when you are sure they are not looking, check the value of your gift and send it in for cash. Since it is brand new, it will be worth more than one that’s been used for a year or two and is no longer the latest model. You could be looking at a hundred bucks or more in your pocket if you act quickly.
Here’s another little secret to getting money for stuff you don’t want. Gazelle also offers to buy electronic games, navigation devices, digital cameras, laptop computers and many other recent vintage technology gear. It’s a virtual gold mine right after the flurry of holiday gift giving has subsided. It’s also a way you can regularly get cash for stuff you are upgrading any time of year. Who knew that free electronic gadgets could be worth so much?

Recycle Your Cell Phone To Save A Gorilla
There are many good reasons to recycle old cellphones, but one of the best is to save the Eastern Lowland Mountain Gorilla in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
How is it that what you do with a cell phone affects gorillas in Africa? It has to do with our fragile and tightly coupled ecosystem. Here’s what happens. Cellphones are constructed from various electronic components. One of these is a tantalum capacitor. Tantalum is a rare and valuable metal that enables once physically large capacitors to be made small enough to squeeze into those slim cell phone cases. You get tantalum from columbite tantalite, a metallic ore called Coltan for short. Eighty percent of the world’s Coltan reserves are found in Africa, with the majority of the deposits located within the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ah, you are starting to see the connection. Here’s how the gorillas get involved. It’s illegal to mine for Coltan in the Congo, but with the material going for as much as $400 a kilogram, such mining continues on a large scale. Forests are cleared to make way for the mining and paved roads are installed. The gorillas become exposed and easy targets for bush meat hunters who sell the meat to feed miners and rebel armies in control of the area. More than half of the mountain gorilla population has been lost in just the last five years. It’s also thought that an entire population of elephants has also been wiped out in this activity.
So what we have is a situation where demand for a rare mineral has mushroomed to support the hundreds of millions of cell phones manufactured for use worldwide. High prices for Coltan have promoted the destruction of wild habitat and the killing of endangered gorillas and elephants who once enjoyed a protected environment. Is this just the price we have to pay for technology or can something be done?
Something is being done. The Jane Goodall Institute and Melbourne Zoo in Australia have joined forces to create a mobile phone recycling program called “They’re Calling on You.”You can visit the zoo to collect a postage paid recycling satchel or download and print a postage paid label to send your phone in. They’ve even got a program for corporations to donate fleets of old mobile phones. If your school would like to help, you can integrate the program into your curriculum.
They’re indeed calling on you and, if you live in Australia, you have the unique honor of being able to answer this call. But what about the rest of the world? Is there anything we can do?
Absolutely, there is. In the United States, Gazelle offers a cell phone and electronic gadgets recycling program that also includes a free mailer. This one goes beyond mobile phones to include electronic games, computers and even photography gear. They will even pay you for recent vintage equipment in good working order.
Elsewhere around the world, look for local or large scale recycling programs. But whatever you do, don’t toss that cell phone in the trash. That only compounds the problem. In addition to the damage done by creating the product in the first place, electronic components degrade in the environment and leach out toxic chemicals that can pollute the soil and water table.
The recycling programs offer a double benefit. They not only prevent damage from decaying products, they also reduce the need for mining and manufacturing by refurbishing the old phones for use in disadvantaged communities. Devices too old or not functional can be ground up by reclaimers to recycle the minerals to make new phones.
Listen! They’re really calling you... and it’s a very important call!

Recycle Video Games and Gaming Systems
So, how many video games and gaming systems do you have? Not just the two or three that you are using now. How many different systems and how many games for each system are there hidden in the nooks and crannies of your house or apartment? Too many to count? I thought so.
Now, how would you like to quickly and easily convert some of those games and game consoles that you aren’t using anymore to cash? Yes, cold, hard cash. Well, actually it’s a check and it’s neither cold nor hard. But it is money. It’s money that you can use to buy anything you want, including the latest in video games and gaming systems.
Did I happen to mention that this is quick and easy? One of the reasons that we all have a bunch of systems and dozens upon dozens of games scattered here and there is that unloading them can be a lot of trouble. Unless you have a local store that buys this stuff, you are faced with the onerous chore of running classified ads and dealing with whoever shows up at the door and whenever they decide to show up. Or, you can take pictures and run auctions, hoping for the best. Oh, it didn’t sell? That’s depressing.
Forget all that grief. Sell your used video games and game systems to an online recycler and be done with it in minutes, not hours or days. The process is about as easy as you can get and it’s even fun. Think of it as a treasure hunt. You’re on the hunt to see what you can get for stuff that’s just taking up space right now. All you need to do is run a quick search for the game or game platform that you own. You can also just browse through the selections if you have the time and enjoy the trip down memory lane.
Once you’ve found your game, just answer a couple of quick questions about the condition of the game disc or cartridge and what accessories you have. Then click the “Calculate” button and find out how much you’ll get paid for what you have. Each one takes a matter of a few second. If you like the offer, you can add it to your “box” which is like a shopping cart in reverse. All done? Go ahead and request a free pre-paid mailer. When it comes, pack your items in it and send it on its way. Once the condition of your submission have been verified, you’ll get a check in the mail. It could be enough to buy a new game. It might be enough to buy a whole new system. It all depends on what you have and what condition it is in. The newer and cleaner, the better.
What type of games and gaming systems can you sell? If you have anything for Atari, Microsoft Xbox or Xbox 360, Nintendo GameBoy or GameBoy Advance, Gamecube, DS, DS Lite, Wii, Sega Dreamcast, Sony Playstation 2 or 3 or PSP, you may be in luck. This is not a comprehensive list, so even if you have something else, it is worth your while to take a few seconds and see if you can get paid.
By the way, electronics recycling is not limited to video games and consoles. The most popular item to recycle is cell phones. There are hundreds of millions of them out there and many could be easily converted to cash. Also, digital cameras, desktop and laptop computers, LCD monitors, projectors, streaming media devices, home audio Blu-Ray players, satellite radios, camcorders, camera lenses, MP3 players, external drives, PDAs and even movies. Round up all your electronic stuff and send them in. You may be sitting on a small fortune and not even know it.

Micro USB Car Chargers
I think the main reason I really like this product is A it's black (I really like black electronics) and B it's low profile. Basically it barley sticks out of the lighter socket in your car, which is great. I already own a similar product for all my automotive charging needs but this one really catches my eye. The 12V DC adapter that I currently own sticks out over an inch further then this one does. You wouldn't really think this is a problem but because of the added length my charger tend to hang a pry the adapter out of the socket or at least dislodge it enough to quit charging my devices.
There are my thoughts now. Go buy this because it's good, handy, and will save you money!
EverWin Micro Sized USB Car Charger (Black)
iLuv IAD215BLK Micro-size USB Car Charger, Black
UPDATE: Do you like white electronics better? Well then have your cake and eat it too with this white version that's only $4.99!
2ND UPDATE: If you don't mind a USB charger that sticks out a little bit more then check out this one. http://goo.gl/u77L
It's almost 75% cheaper then the other even with shipping!

Even if you weren’t born in the Year of the Tiger, a tiger talisman can still be your lucky charm... especially if it is a Poken Tiger.
Another way you can honor the tiger this year is to support efforts that protect the mere 3,500 tigers still in the wild. Yes, their numbers have dwindled from more than 100,000 just a century ago to near extinction today. Only 50 of the South China or Amoy tiger remain. There still is time to save the world’s last tigers before we lose them completely. Learn more about Tigers Under Threat and consider donating help save this magnificent species.
