Fixed Mobile Convergence Includes Android and iPhone
When we think of network convergence, it is generally in terms of engineering the LAN, MAN and WAN to support voice, video and data. Network convergence is at the heart of the productivity and cost savings offered by enterprise VoIP solutions. Even so, there is still one piece missing. That’s the mobile phone. This is where FMC or Fixed Mobile Convergence comes into play.
The idea behind FMC is that cell phones, especially smartphones, are now so ubiquitous that they have to be included in the corporate communications structure or there will be a big hole in the system. It’s especially true for sales people, field engineers, and anyone else who spends a significant amount of time out of the office and away from the desk phone. It’s also true, perhaps unfortunately, that we’re in a 24/7 world where important calls may come in at any time.
Some employees handle this situation with workarounds, such as setting up the office phone to forward to their cell phone when they leave the office. That’s fine when they remember. If not, voice mail becomes the communications method of last resort. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have the office phone system extended to include your mobile phone?
Smoothstone IP Communications thinks so and is now making their Mobile Connect app available to both Android and iPhone using customers. What Mobile Connect does integrate your smartphone into the enterprise communications platform. You then have one number, your work number, that rings on both your desk phone and your cell phone. When you place an outgoing call, the Caller ID reflects your work number, not your personal mobile number. Other calling features include access to the company directory, low cost international calling, 4-digit on-net dialing, visual voice mail and one-touch access to listen to and manipulate voice mail messages.
There are also advanced features from Smoothstone’s VoiceMAXX system that carry over to Mobile Connect. These include call recording and centralized call detail reporting.
VoiceMAXX is Smoothstone’s cloud based PBX telephone system. It relieves businesses of the need to invest in and maintain an on-premises PBX system, yet has the flexibility to integrate with and extend an existing PBX.
Cloud hosted PBX is a pay-as-you go proposition that easily scales to include more users as needed. With a cloud solution, you don’t have to over-provision your system to allow for growth. You simply buy more capacity as you need it. You also don’t have the agony of a “fork lift upgrade” that involves ripping out your old PBX and replacing it with a new one of higher capacity, more modern design or more features. All of those capital investment, installation, upgrades and daily maintenance tasks are taken care of by the cloud service provider. You just concentrate on those things that advance the business you are in.
Is your existing business telephone system creaking at the seams, or are you ready for the higher productivity that comes from advanced features such as fixed mobile convergence? If so, learn more and get pricing for cloud hosted PBX telephone services scaled to match the needs of your business, be it small, medium or enterprise level.

Odd Lots March 29
The official definition of odd lot is a group of shares amounting to less than 100 shares. For purposes of Stockerblog.com, it is a group of news snippets from various financial and business web sites. It has nothing to do with being 'odd'.

Slow Dance and The Mayan Calendars made simple
I was watching a documentary the other night about the Mayan calendar prediction most of us are familiar with. It says the world will come to an end on Dec 21, 2012.
There would be earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis of such proportions that together they would wipe out life on Earth. I believe there is always that possibility. A meteor could even hit Earth and break it into smithereens. In fact, one did hit Earth billions of years ago destroying 97% of life on Earth. What survived were just wriggly worms at the bottom of the ocean. Scientists have discovered that the universe is infinite and in this infinite universe, everything is possible, including the obliteration of the human race lest we think we are a superior being. We are mere travellers in time and a small speck in the spectrum of things.
Given our vulnerability and the impermanence of everything around us, including ourselves, it only makes sense to really live life as best as it could be lived. Take life a little easy perhaps and stop to smell the roses, so to speak.
Someone sent me a chain email of a poem purportedly written by a terminally-ill girl and recipients have been requested to forward it in the hope that enough email addresses could secure treatment funds from a certain cancer society. Like all chain emails or letters, this one has been busted as a hoax by Snopes, the hoax-buster. But if we look beyond the hoax bit, the poem (written by David L. Weatherford, an adult male child psychologist), is worth paying attention to though. The poem is one from his poem collection. It's titled
SLOW DANCE
Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down, don't dance so fast.
Time is shor, the music won't last.
Do you run through each day on the fly?
When you ask How are you?, do you hear the reply?
When the day is done, do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores running through your head?
You'd better slow down, don't dance so fast.
Time is short, the music won't last.
Ever told your child, we'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste, not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch, let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time to call and say,'Hi'
You'd better slow down, don't dance so fast.
Time is short, the music won't last..
When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift.... thrown away.
Life is not a race, do take it slower
Hear the music before the song is over.
Back to the Mayan calendar.. Here is a set of two videos about Mayan calendars. This is a collaborative work of two experts in this field who have spent decades researching the subject as well as visiting the Mayan lands seeking truths and clarifications. Each video is an hour and thirty minutes long but they both are worth watching. Not only will you learn about the different Mayan calendars, you will also get an insight into the Evolution of Consciousness, a mind state that results in the creation of events throughout time. Insightful.

Top Water Purification and Desalination Stocks

Radioactive substances leaking into the Japanese water supply has drawn attention to water in general. According to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Water, almost a billion people will not have enough water by the year 2050. This is causing investors to look at desalination, also referred to as desalinization and desalinisation, which could be one of the leading industries in the next decade, along with water purification. Some major companies, such as Siemens (SI) and General Electric (GE) have water desalination divisions that make up a small part of their businesses, but there are other companies which are more of a pure play in the industry.
According to the list of water purification and desalination stocks at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com, there are over twenty companies involved in the treatment of water, and a dozen paying yields above 1%.
Consolidated Water Co. Ltd (CWCO) is one of the purest plays in the sector. It operates seawater desalination plants and other water services in the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, and Bermuda, using reverse osmosis technology to convert seawater to drinkable water. The stock trades at 17 times forward earnings and pays a decent yield of 2.8%. The company has raised its dividend in eight of the last ten years.
Tetra Tech (TTEK) designs and builds desalination systems that use seawater, brackish water, and reclaimed wastewater sources to help increase water supply, and has been designing desalination plants in Florida since the 1990s. It also designed the first California desalination plant, the Corona Temescal Desalter. The stock trades at 15 times forward earnings. Earnings for the latest quarter were up 19% year over year.

Japanese Cartoon Character: Drinking Plutonium is Safe!
The main points seem to be:
- Plutonium has been given a bad rap because of that whole Nagasaki a-bomb thing. You really shouldn’t be so afraid of it! It’s great stuff for making electric power.
- Don’t believe that nonsense about plutonium being turned into nuclear weapons if it falls into the wrong hands. The type of plutonium used at Japanese nuclear power plants cannot be readily used for nuclear weapons. Any wannabe weapons makers would also need a ridiculous amount of technical knowledge and very advanced equipment. But even that shouldn’t matter, because the plutonium at nuclear plants is heavily guarded.
- Don’t believe all those exaggerations about plutonium being super deadly and giving people cancer. As long as you don’t breath in particles of plutonium or somehow get it into your blood, you should be fine. In fact, if you drank a cup of plutonium-contaminated water, peeing and pooping will cleanse your body of the contaminant before it can do harm.
- The use of plutonium is so heavily restricted that it is almost unthinkable that it could get leaked or released in a way that would cause harm to humans. But even if it did, say, get dumped into your water supply, there’s no need to worry. Most of it would be too heavy to make its way into drinking water, and even if it did, you’d just get rid of it by going to the toilet.
