3x3 Mbps Ethernet Doubles Your Bandwidth

Who couldn’t use a little extra bandwidth these days? The size of files, applications and web pages has been steadily increasing. Unfortunately, IT budgets haven’t. What would you say if I told you that you could double your bandwidth and not have to pay any more than you do now? Would you go for a deal like that?

Get 3x3 Mbps Ethernet over Copper for the same price as T1. Click to check availabilty and prices. It may seem odd to think that you can get twice the bandwidth for the same line cost that you are paying now. After all, network service providers aren’t in the business of giving away something for nothing. Of course not. The cost savings doesn’t come from simply replacing what you have with an identical service from another vendor. It comes from switching to a newer technology that has lower costs.

You could double your bandwidth with your current vendor or a competitive one if you want to stay with T1 line service. What you do is call up and order another T1 line to be bonded with the one you are running now. Bonding is a process of making two lines work as if they were one larger line. A T1 line has a bandwidth of 1.5 Mbps. Bond in a second T1 line and you have 3 Mbps.

There are a few limitations to this process. First, you need to get both of your T1 lines from the same vendor. That’s either the carrier you have now or a new one for both lines. Second, your monthly bill is going to double. After all, two lines equals 2x the cost. You may well be able to pay less than twice your current line charges by going with another vendor that charges less for the same service. But this alone it isn’t likely to get you 3 Mbps for the price of 1.5 Mbps.

Instead, consider changing from T1 line service to Ethernet over Copper. Both are highly reliable WAN services with dedicated bandwidth for business applications. Both services are available as managed services with the service provider taking care of any customer premises equipment needed to interface to the lines and to your network.

The other similarity between bonded T1 lines and Ethernet over Copper is that they are both delivered over multiple twisted pair copper wires. These are the same copper wires that already come into your facility to provide multi-line telephone service. There is a technology difference between the signals on a T1 line and those on an Ethernet line, but from a users perspective they operate the same.

What isn’t the same is the cost. Ethernet over Copper is a newer technology that makes more efficient use of the potential bandwidth available from copper landlines. Ethernet over Copper or EoC pricing is very aggressive and is currently running at about half the cost of double bonded T1 lines. In other words, you pay the same for a 3 Mbps EoC service as your pay for a 1.5 Mbps T1 service.

There are a couple of other differences, too. T1 only scales up by increments of 1.5 Mbps. Every time you bond another T1 line you add 1.5 Mbps of bandwidth. Ethernet is far more granular. You can find Ethernet bandwidth services from 1 Mbps on up to 10 Gbps, although the higher line speeds require fiber optic cabling. But unlike T1 lines, Ethernet over Copper has a limited service footprint. You are most likely to find it in major cities and suburbs, not out in rural areas.

Would you like to double your bandwidth for the same money you spend now? Get pricing and availability for 3 x 3 Mbps Ethernet over Copper or other Ethernet bandwidth services to see how much savings is available at your location.

DIA and VPN For Europe

Level 3 Communications, a Tier 1 Internet networking services company with a global fiber optic footprint, is bringing its Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) and Virtual Private Network (VPN) services portfolio to European markets, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom. As the worldwide business climate improves, international connectivity will become more and more important for business success in a global marketplace.

DIA and VPN network services for European, as well as other international markets. Click for pricing and availability.Major multinational corporations and larger Internet Service Providers may operate their own Autonomous System (AS) networks that give them the ability to peer with other networks and purchase IP transit services to get to the Internet backbone. But many businesses don’t have or want the level of investment that it takes to operate an International private network. These companies still need high quality, reliable Internet access for e-commerce, communication with their customers, and private connections between far-flung company locations.

Dedicated Internet Access is the service of choice for most business users. What dedicated means is that you have exclusive use of the bandwidth that you purchase to connect to the Internet. But isn’t that always the case? Not really. Residential users and smaller businesses get by with shared bandwidth arrangements such as DSL, Cable broadband, two-way high speed satellite Internet, and 3G or 4G wireless.

The motivation behind bandwidth sharing is that costs are shared as well. The cost of shared bandwidth broadband services is usually well below equivalent speed dedicated bandwidth services. The price you pay is acceptance of not having a guaranteed bandwidth. Indeed, the bandwidth at any given time is a function of how many other users are sharing the service and what they are doing. Just a few people download huge software, database or video files can bring a speedy line to a crawl.

You don’t experience this with Dedicated Internet Access. You have the full T1 line speed of 1.5 Mbps or E1 line speed of 2.0 Mbps available in both upload and download directions at all times. Ethernet access connections are becoming popular as replacements for legacy T1/E1 lines. Ethernet is highly scalable from 1 Mbps on up to 10 Gbps. The lower line speeds can be provisioned over twisted pair copper, while higher speeds require fiber optic connections.

The VPN or Virtual Private Network is a way to take advantage of the universal reach of the Internet while adding a layer of security to protect your data during the time it is traversing the Internet.

Many companies have private point to point connections to securely link multiple business locations within a metropolitan areas or in nearby states. International private lines are also available, but they are pretty expensive for smaller companies to connect with sales offices overseas.

The Virtual Private Network makes it possible for businesses of all sizes to interconnect their domestic or global facilities. Another popular use for VPNs is to provide access to company networks for employees working from home or on the road. Without VPN capability, the organization would have to install a dedicated line between the corporate data center and they employee’s home at considerable cost.

The way a VPN works is that it encrypts the data packets so that they can’t be decoded by anyone who happens to gain access to them along the way. The process is said to create a “tunnel” through the Internet. There a two popular ways to do this. One is IPSec, which requires special client software at each end to perform the encryption and decryption of the data. Another approach is SSL or Secure Socket Layer. This technique requires only a standard Web browser for access. It uses the same encryption employed by ecommerce sites so that visitors can make online purchases securely.

Do you have need for Dedicated Internet Access or Virtual Private Network service to support your business or organization? If so, get prices and availability for DIA and VPN services to meet your requirements.

The History of Ford: The Company that Didn't Take Taxpayer Bailouts

An interesting history of the original Ford (F) automobile. I found the last part of the video most interesting, the Model T driving through snow, sand, and water. Remember, this was the company that didn't take taxpayer bailouts, unlike General Motors (GM) and Chrysler.

Disclosure: I own Ford stock and I drive a Ford.

Egypt Stocks: A Contrarian Play?

It is hard to miss the news about the anti-government protests in Egypt. Looters are roaming neighborhoods in Cairo and the death toll from the demonstrations is now above 100. The military has even blocked tourists from seeing the pyramids. Now the Obama administration has threatened to cut foreign aid to the country because of the crackdown on protesters.

So the big question is, is there a contrarian turn-around play here? The Market Vectors Egypt Index ETF (EGPT) is down over 20% during the last twelve months. Investing in this ETF is probably the simplest way to invest in Egyptian companies. The stocks in its portfolio contain many of the following.

Commercial International Bank (CIBEY.PK) is a bank holding company in Egypt with over 70 branches. The stock trades at 14.2 times earnings and six times sales. Earnings for the quarter ending September 30 were up 52% on a 38% increase in revenues.

EFG Hermes GDR (EFGZF.PK) is in the business of investment banking, private equity, asset management and investment brokerage, and the manage two funds, the Jordan Hi-Tech Venture Fund Limited, which invests in the information technology sector in Jordan, and the Middle East Technology Fund. This $1.9 billion market cap fund trades at 5.2 times sales.

Orascom Construction GDR (ORSDF.PK) is in the business of manufacturing and marketing building materials, and in construction contracting, operating in 20 countries. The stock has a price to earnings ratio of 18 and a price sales ratio of 1.7. Earnings for the latest quarter were up over 22%.

Orascom Telecom SAE (ORSTF.PK) is an international mobile communications operating in Algeria, Pakistan, Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. The stock has a PE ratio of 3.9 and a PS ratio of 0.77.

The Hargreaves Review – perhaps we don’t have to make heavy weather of this

Last year David Cameron initiated a review of the UK’s IP law – to come up with proposals for how it can further promote entrepreneurialism, economic growth and social and commercial innovation. The review subsequently issued a call for evidence (deadline 4 March). This sets out specific questions but welcomes contributions beyond their scope. Some of the questions are about copyright and some about enforcement.

Given that economic data about copyright is extremely limited, this seems like a good idea in theory, but very ambitious in practice. Won’t it be difficult to conjure up new significant, reliable and balanced economic data in this timeframe?

Perhaps I can help? I wondered. I checked the bottom drawer of my desk. No unpublished economic studies languishing there… How about my own experience? Could that count as a case study?

During the Nineties and the Noughties I spent about fifteen years working in book publishing in editorial and legal capacities. I attended hundreds of editorial meetings and reviewed thousands of book proposals. Some of our authors were certainly groundbreaking economic successes – Nick Hornby and Terry Pratchett spring to mind.

Did copyright law support the publishing business? That’s easy – yes, without it there would be no publishing business. Did copyright law ever get in the way? That’s easy too – no. I never once heard anyone say they couldn’t publish a book because of copyright law (libel law, that’s another story). Is it different in the US? No. Has digitization made a difference? No.

There – that wasn’t so difficult. Next question?

Top Lithium Battery Plays

Lithium is used in more than 60% of mobile phones. It is also the leading treatment for bipolar disorders due to the counteraction of both depression and mania. As a matter if fact, in areas where the water contained large amounts of lithium, there were significantly lower suicide rates. Lithium also has a lot of other uses including rocket propellants, red fireworks, and high temperature grease.

WallStreetNewsNetwork.com has just updated its list of over 20 stocks involved in the lithium industry, from the mining companies to the producers of lithium ion batteries. The stocks range from microcaps to large corporations that pay dividends.

As an example, FMC Corp. (FMC) has a division based in Argentina called FMC Lithium, which owns the Salar de Hombre Muerto mine, containing 850,000 tons of reserves at up to 70 meters of depth. FMC trades at 13.5 times forward earnings, and pays a small yield of 0.7%.

Sociedad Quimica y Minera (SQM), also known as Chemical & Mining Co. of Chile Inc., is the largest lithium producer in the world. This New York Stock Exchange traded company, which has a market cap of almost $13.9 billion, has a forward price to earnings ratio of 27 and a yield of 1.0%.

Advanced Battery Technologies, Inc. (ABAT) is one of the few battery manufacturers generating a profit. The company, which makes rechargeable polymer lithium-ion batteries, has a PE of 6.5.

Another alternative is to invest in the new Exchange Traded Fund called Global X Lithium ETF (LIT), which is designed to track the Solactive Global Lithium Index. This ETF is up 23.5% for the last three months.

Crop Circle in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Are crop circles (or also referred to as crop formations as they are not always circular) created by UFOs? The above (courtesy of TheJakartaPost), a large circle formation has been found in a rice field in Krasakan hamlet in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, a few days ago.

Though clearly sculptured by humans - it looks like an intricately designed flower - the 70-meter-wide (70-yard-wide) circle has drawn so much attention that police have blocked off the area with yellow tape. Villagers have started charging entrance fees.

Among those turning out offering opinions were officials from Indonesia's space agency, well-respected astronomers and nuclear agency officials. All agree it was not left by a UFO.

From Wikipedia,
While the exact date crop circles began to appear is unknown, the documented cases have substantially increased from the 1970s to current times. Twenty-six countries ended up reporting approximately ten-thousand crop circles, in the last third of the 20th century, and 90% of those were located in southern England. Many of the formations appearing in that area are positioned near ancient monuments, such as Stonehenge. Formations usually are made overnight, but have also been made during the day.

Crop circles have been created as part of art practice as well as for commercial reasons. Crop circle pranksters have also been taken to court for causing damage to crops.

Whatever it is, I think crop circles are beautiful creations much like the crop art of Japan. Here are two crop circles as featured in Wikipedia.

This one was in Switzerland.

This one is a 780 ft crop circle in the form of a double (six-sided) triskelion composed of 409 circles found in Milk Hill, England.

Web Feature: How Secure Is My Password

BACKGROUND
If you want to know if your password is secure enough, this website will give you a rough idea. HowSecureIsMyPassword will calculate your password strength and present it in terms of time it will take a desktop PC to hack your password using the brute force method.

USER REVIEW
HowSecureIsMyPassword uses JavaScript to calculate the password strength. Because javascript is a client side script (calculation/operation are done on your local PC and not on the website's server), it is safe to use since the password string will not be transmitted. But if you are very cautious, you can also disconect your internet connection after loading the page. Then do your calculations on their page while offline. After you are done, clear your browser's cache and cookies before reconnecting to the internet.
The calculations' result is accurate although in real brute force attack of your password, many factors will affect the time it will take. This involves the computing power of the PC used for the attack and the type of account the password is used for. Many online accounts has maximum attempt limits and will lockout the account for the day after such number of failed attempts.

Metro Ethernet MPLS Combo

Two of the hottest networking technologies now are Metro Ethernet and MPLS networks. We normally think of using one or the other. But what advantages are gained when you combine the two?

Metro Ethernet and MPLS network services for your business applications.Metro Ethernet is the familiar Ethernet protocol that we’ve come to know and love on our LAN networks. It’s not exactly the same, because it needs to be adapted to work over longer distances than typical building and campus runs.

This, and other service enhancements, have been standardized by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF), an industry group comprised of over 170 companies and more than 75 service providers. The MEF has defined five attributes that distinguish what they call Carrier Ethernet from the familiar LAN based Ethernet. These are standardized services, scalability, reliability, service management and quality of service.

What carriers get is a set of certified network elements that work to connect users on a local or worldwide basis. They also have services that can be transported over whatever physical networks they have available, including legacy TDM networks originally designed for telephony.

Metro Ethernet is Carrier Ethernet implemented within a city or metropolitan area. Two of the popular standardized services are Ethernet Line Service, a point to point connection, and Ethernet LAN Service, a multipoint connection. Companies use Metro Ethernet to link branch office buildings, factories, warehouses, data centers and other locations in the area.

Ethernet can also be used as a last mile access connection to larger private networks or the public Internet. These links have traditionally been T1 lines, DS3 connections, or SONET/SDH fiber optic services. Ethernet is growing in popularity as a network access service because it is lower in cost and more scalable than legacy telecom services.

At the same time that Carrier Ethernet has soared in popularity, MPLS networks have seen a similar growth in demand. Most networks have a defined protocol that they run. This can be TDM, IP, Frame Relay, or something else. The beauty of MPLS networks is that they are designed to support all protocols. Hence, the name Multi-Protocol Label Switching. The label switching part has to do with a tagging system that is used to encapsulate and route packets while they are on the network. Since the MPLS network doesn’t need to use the internal packet structure for routing, it doesn’t matter what those labels are attached to.

Most new large scale networks are based on MPLS. It doesn’t matter what’s running as the core network. It might be IP. It might be SONET. What the user sees is a privately run network that can securely transport voice, data, video or converged network traffic within a city, between cities or around the world. MPLS networks have all but completely replaced the older Frame Relay networks that were once used to link computers over wide areas.

What you probably have guessed is that Ethernet and MPLS are very compatible. Many carriers have nationwide or international MPLS network service footprints. You can combine Ethernet access with a large MPLS network and create a very cost effective way to link your geographically diverse business locations.

Large scale Carrier Ethernet networks are also on the ascendency. A new interconnection standard called ENNI or Ethernet Network to Network Interface connects Carrier Ethernet service providers so they can share traffic and effectively increase their service footprints. The underlying transport networks may or may not be MPLS networks themselves.

What’s combination of Ethernet and MPLS offers the highest performance at the lowest cost for your applications? There are network consultants available right now to provide you with Metro Ethernet and MPLS service options and pricing at no charge for serious business and organizational users.

Build broad app portfolios, publishers told

Publishers can’t base their mobile strategies on a single app for the iPad and another for smart phones, warns a thoughtful new white paper from the International Newsmedia Marketing Association. Rather, the study says, publishers have to produce an ever-evolving variety of apps for each platform to appeal to an increasingly fragmented market of consumers. The INMA report, which was released

The New Renaissance

In April last year the European Commission commissioned a reflection group (‘comité des sages’) to make recommendations for bringing Europe’s cultural heritage online. The Comité has now delivered their report, ‘The New Renaissance’.

As well as looking forward to EU orphan works legislation, the Comité would like to avoid future orphan works by introducing registration for copyright. ‘Refreshing’ the Berne Convention is in order. ‘Creative production is exploding online (e.g. user-generated content) without a clear indication of how to contact the creator…’

They would like to see all out-of-distribution works digitized even if they are not orphans. If right owners don’t want to exploit, digitization should be paid for with public money. ‘It may be necessary to collectively manage the rights to older out of distribution works’ with remuneration for rights holders and the possibility to opt out. They believe that the primary responsibility must rest with the public sector, though in partnership with the private sector with up to 7 years preferential use by private partners.

According to the report:
‘The ease with which today’s users can access big search engines and platforms and find an overwhelming offer of information, books, newspapers, websites, archival material, pictures, music or movies naturally leads to expectations towards cultural institutions. Accustomed to the comfort of search engines and new services, they expect to find everything on the web. “What is not on the web, does not exist” is the core of their belief and behaviour. What is on the shelves, in the archives, in the exhibition halls of cultural institutions will soon fall into oblivion, if it is not digitised and offered alongside the born digital works and all the other internet services.’
It seems that in the New Renaissance people will never travel to exotic places to see real works of art (to be astonished by their size or mesmerized by their brushstrokes). They will work as scanning-machine engineers, obesity doctors or information-overload therapists. And one day someone at the central cultural website Europeana will finish reading the last Mills & Boon novel, inspecting the last photograph of a coin and watching the last episode of Coronation Street and in a moment of joyous liberation he will reach for the big Delete button … and the Renaissance will slide peacefully back into the Dark Ages.

Court sheds light on lamp protection

It's not the sort of case that crops up on a daily basis, but Case C‑168/09 Flos SpA v Semeraro Casa e Famiglia SpA, a Court of Milan reference to the European Court of Justice for a preliminary ruling, does raise some interesting points of principle.  What happened here is that Flos's classic Arca lamp, created in 1962, was originally protected by design law in Italy but fell into the public domain.   Subsequently, when Italy implemented the Design Directive (Directive 98/71), the lamp fell back into the private domain, this time being protected by copyright.  Semeraro imported Chinese Fluida lamps which looked pretty much the same, so Flos sued for copyright infringement.

Now different versions of the Italian law (i) provided for a 10-year moratorium on enforcing copyright against defendants trading in re-protected works or (ii) provided that they couldn't be sued for an indefinite period of time.  Were these laws compatible with the Directive's Article 17, which states:
"A design protected by a design right registered in or in respect of a Member State in accordance with this Directive shall also be eligible for protection under the law of copyright of that State as from the date on which the design was created or fixed in any form. The extent to which, and the conditions under which, such a protection is conferred, including the level of originality required, shall be determined by each Member State".
No, said the court, Italy was precluded from enacting moratoria which eroded the effective benefit that copyright was intended to confer. This ruling is particularly interesting in its analysis and application of the principle of the protection of legitimate expectations -- a doctrine that doesn't get discussed in IP cases before the ECJ.

Dog Abuser, he is not

Alamak! A case of mistaken identity.

Yesterday, I agonised for over 15 minutes watching that video of a brown poodle being abused by its owner. The video is 15:07-minute long, I believe. The news was all over the papers the past few days and complaints officially lodged with the relevant authorities.

Fingers were pointing at a chef in Malacca (name, shop location and even his mobile phone number were provided) and his ex-wife as being the perpetrators - one did the actual beating, the other did the recording.

Well, whaddayaknow! As it turns out as confirmed by The Star today, it is merely a case of mistaken identity and his business experienced a sudden increase as curious people thronged his shop to catch a glimpse of him. Meanwhile, the dog-abuser is still not known.

I will spare you the agony by not linking the video here but one thing is for sure, I think people like that need professional help, help they can only get at a residential rehab centre where they have expertise for all sorts of rehabilitation treatments.

By the way, the video is posted not by the dog-abuser himself but by the person who found the lost pen-drive with the video in it, with the hope of highlighting this inhumane act.

Benefits of a Gigabit Ethernet Network Connection

The need for high bandwidth connectivity has sneaked up on some companies. That T1 line they ordered years ago turned into a DS3 connection and perhaps a move to OC3 fiber optic service. But it still seems like there is a bottleneck. Perhaps it is time to consider a move to GigE or Gigabit Ethernet.

You can increase your WAN bandwdith considerably with a Gigabit Ethernet network connection. One thing you should know about the other telecom services you’ve ordered over the years is that they are derived from telephone company technology. Yes, they’re reliable. Yes, they work just fine. But they weren’t designed from the ground up to mirror what you are running on your network today. As a consequence, you may have interface issues and you are probably paying a lot more than you would have to for the same connection speed.

The beauty of having Ethernet as your standard protocol both inside and outside of your facility is that there are no connectivity issues. It’s Ethernet all the way. You can use it like you use any other high bandwidth connection to transport voice, video or data packets from point to point. You also have the option to employ your Ethernet connection as a way to link multiple LANs together in one large bridged LAN. It’s a way to connect all your geographically diverse locations as if they were simply on different floors of the same building.

There was a time just a few years ago when Gigabit Ethernet running on a local area networks was as absurd an idea as ordering up a Gigabit Ethernet WAN connection. For one thing, Metro Ethernet and Carrier Ethernet are relatively new services. For another, Gigabit Ethernet was considered a ridiculously large amount of bandwidth.

Nobody laughs at GigE anymore. They don’t even shake their head in disbelief. What they want to know is where they can get Gigabit Ethernet service and how much it will cost them.

The reason for this change of attitude is that computer applications are sucking up bandwidth like it is an infinite resource. It’s the way that microprocessor clock speed just couldn’t get high enough or that RAM memory was always about half what you really needed. Multiple core processors and lower RAM prices have allowed computers to keep up with demanding applications such as video processing. It’s networks that are now under pressure.

You may already be running Gigabit Ethernet on your LAN. Many PCs, peripherals, switches, routers and network appliances come with 10/100/1000 Mbps Network Interface Cards standard. GigE gives you the network throughput you need to efficiently transfer files and run real time simulations and processes without creating time wasting bottlenecks. Now, what about connections that leave your facility?

If you need to transfer medical images or do video production, a Gigabit Ethernet connection may at the low end of what you’ll be needing. If you’ve consolidated data centers and need to access files remotely from a large facility, GigE is no luxury.

Fortunately, Gigabit Ethernet WAN connections are readily available in metropolitan areas. Downtown in major cities you may even have two or more carriers bidding for your business. What’s important is that you have or can easily get a fiber optic connection to your building. GigE is way beyond the capability of copper-based facilities and most wireless services.

Can you get Gigabit Ethernet at a reasonable cost? It’s more affordable than ever and competitive carriers are more inclined to bring in fiber service by aerial line or underground. See if you have fiber facilities already in your area. Check now to find fiber optic services at or near your business location. If it’s on the map, you may be in luck.

High Yield Utilities that can Benefit from Lower Fossil Fuel Prices

According to the U. S. Energy Information Administration, fossil fuels supply about 70 percent of the country's requirements for electricity generation. Currently the dominant fossil fuels used by the industry are coal, petroleum, and natural gas.

Many investors feel that the price of oil has peaked for now and is in a downtrend. Some analysts believe that due to the glut of natural gas and the recent major gas finds, that the price of gas will remain low for a while. The price of coal is much lower than it was in 2008. If this trend continues, investors could benefit from investing in utility stocks that use oil, gas, and/or coal as a major fuel source of electrical generation, since the cost savings for these companies should pass through to the bottom line. According to WallStreetNewsNetwork.com, there are around 30 electric utilities with yields above 4%. Many of these companies use fossil fuels as a significant source of fuel to generate electricity.

For example, Pinnacle West Capital Corp. (PNW) has one of the heaviest exposures, with approximately 31% of its electric energy coming from natural gas and oil. About 38% comes from coal and 27% from nuclear. This Phoenix, Arizona based electric utility trades at 14 times earnings and provides a generous yield of 5%. Earnings for the quarter ending September 30 were up 25%. The company reports its latest earnings February 18.

OGE Energy Corp. (OGE) has 38% of its energy coming from natural gas, with 60% from coal. The company serves the south central United States. The stock has a price to earnings ratio of 15 and a yield of 3.3%. Earnings for the quarter ending September 30 were up 19%. The company reports its latest earnings February 17.

Westar Energy Inc. (WR) generates about 7% of its energy from natural gas, with 78% from coal and 14% from nuclear. This utility, which serves Kansas, has a PE of 13.8 and a yield of 4.8%.

Jothys Fish Head Curry Restaurant sues blogger and Google

The Star today carries an article of a Malaysian blogger and Google being sued for defamation by a director of a curry fish head restaurant in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The restaurant is recommended by Lonely Planet.

Excerpts from The Star..
Jothys Sdn Bhd director Tharumaraj Sivaperumal filed a RM6mil civil suit at the Kota Kinabalu High Court, naming blogger Poh Huai Bin as the first defendant and California-based Google Inc as the second defendant.

Tharumaraj said he felt very let down when the blogger demeaned his fish head curry and banana leaf restaurant and urged the people to “avoid it like a bad case of herpes”.

The company is also seeking an order from the court to remove the offending articles from Google and other popular search engines used on the Internet.

Magnificent Maps: Snow, Taxi Cabs, Road Kills, Factory Farming, More Crime!, Victorian Infographics, and the Service Ecology of a City

“The Island satirises the London-centric view of the English capital and its commuter towns as independent from the rest of the country.”  From the exhibit “Magnificent Maps” at the British Library

Magnificent Maps: Snow, Taxi cabs, Road Kills, Factory Farming, More Crime!, Victorian Infographics, and the Service Ecology of a City (to name but a few......).

Oh my, what a mélange!  OK, so none of these topics is connected to any of the others in any way, other than they are all links to cool maps that you guys have sent to me here-lately.  It’s a nice snowy day (where I am, at least!) so a great day to look at cool maps.

Snow Maps - NYC

OK, folks, the links are coming fast and furious!  This just in from Holly Porter-Morgan, and it's very pertinent to our snowy conditions today.  Take a look, and if the road clearing is bad in your neighborhood, now you have a way to "mappily" address it.  JAM

“Thinking about VGI and interactive maps today and I found some great and very timely examples online.  Feel free to send around!”

Starting off, we have the official NYC gov effort.

NYC Snow Update

The NYC map is actually the nicest looking, but that may just be my opinion, because so many interactive maps/mash-ups use Google Maps these days and NYC created their own interactive map (not that the rest of us have the time or money to do that).  This map offers different symbol styles and colors for different reported problems.  It features three categories for a report submission:  Stuck vehicle, Street not clear of snow, and Street clear of Snow.  On the down side, all categories refer to points and none to lines (which are shown in the third map listed).

Mapping Snow Removal in Brooklyn
Has your street been cleared?

I found this on Brooklyn Vegan under the link ‘Report your Brooklyn Snow Problems- Plot them on an Interactive Map. It won’t get your street plowed any faster, but it might make your feel better’.

This interactive map built on the Google Maps interface, which appears to remain active, displays a point for every submitted problem report.  The map viewer can display the reports all in red  (All Categories)  or choose from the various other point colors to see different types of problems reported:   Failure to Remove Snow Reports (purple) ,  Stalled Vehicles & Other Problems Reports (blue) , and Time of Snow Removal Reports (brown).

Also, going back to the snowstorm just after Christmas, there is the “Roadify Plowed Street Map NYC Dec 2010”, which is still live.

Another map built on the Google Maps interface, the page stated ‘edit the map or tell us and we'll do it for you. Just email info@roadify.com or tweet @roadify’.   Kudos to the creators for using Twitter as a way to get information for the map.  Roads that were reported as not plowed were indicated in red, with a few plowed roads indicated in green.  This map went live on Dec 28th and was last updated on Dec. 30th.

Victorian Infographics

Tinted drawing showing the comparative lengths of rivers and heights of mountains worldwide. In: 'General Atlas Of The World: Containing Upwards Of Seventy Maps,' by Adam & Charles Black, Sidney Hall and William Hughes, 1854; published in Edinburgh by A & C Black.

Here is something else to keep you guys occupied and amused on this snowy afternoon - Victorian infographics!  Lesley Kunikis just sent these to me, and they are gorgeous and complicated examples of how crazy people can get graphically. These people had all the patience in the world to construct these diagrams.   Check them out - they are really something!

“Here are links regarding Victorian infographics... pretty cool!”

Taxi cab travel maps/graphics/diagrams/whatever! VISUALIZATIONS!

And here’s some more!

One-Hour of NYC Taxi Trips in One Graphic

From Matthew Croswell:
“Hey Map Monkey,
This is Matt Croswell (work email). I came across this interesting graphic. Although it is not your traditional map, a group mapped taxi trips between 4-5 PM in Manhattan. Pretty interesting, especially the amount of trips within the same neighborhood.
-Matt”

Note to those of you who don't ride in taxis often: between 4 and 5 PM is the dead zone in trying to get a taxi.  4 PM is when the drivers' shifts change, and taxis in Manhattan are scarcer than hens' teeth!

Also check out this link to other cool taxi ridership maps:

The Service Ecology of a City:

From Amy Trexler:
“This website prevents me from doing work all day long.”

Leave it to a zany Dutchman to have a great design blog like this one!  Check out his posting called “Spaced Out in a Flat World,” too.

Nutrire Milano (Feeding Milan) is also exploring the relationships between food systems, service innovation, and sustainable urban development. A project of the Slow Food Movement with Milan Polytechnic, Nutrire Milano also uses maps to highlight where there are gaps or blockages in the ways food is produced and distributed.

More Crime Maps!

And, just in from Carrie Beth Lasley (she is in New Orleans):

“The local paper, the Time-Picayune, has been running daily crime maps. This is part of the new Police Chief's effort to engage more with the public. Here's a link to one. They do it district-by-district every weekday on the Web.
http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2011/01/nopd_1st_district_crime_map_ja_4.html

Carrie Beth”

Factory Farms

From Dan Kulakowski:

“I thought this was a pretty cool map, and presented another reason for me to be happy to not live in the middle of the country.”

http://www.factoryfarmmap.org/#animal:all;location:US;year:2007
However, Dan, New York State is not immune from the bad impacts of factory farming, either.  As one of the facts on the website states: “The nearly 213,000 dairy cows on factory-farm dairies in New York produce as much untreated manure as 47 million people -- two and a half times the population of New York.”  A sobering thought…and believe it or not, the amount of factory farming in NY State has increased quite significantly in the past 10 years, according to the charts on the web page.

Magnificent Maps

Detail of the Fra Mauro Map, part of the exhibit at the British Library
From Brian Morgan:

“Here's a cool online map exhibit from BBC 4 to spend some time exploring.  There's some really nice stuff in here, you might want to pass it along to students or anyone else who might enjoy it.”

This is where you can look in detail at the maps.

Very cool stuff!  Check out the “Explore Themes” function when you get to the individual maps, for instance Fra Mauro’s 1450 map of the world.

And speaking of the good brother, Fra Mauro, before the spring term starts, and if you have nothing in particular to do to while away the hours, I very much recommend a tiny little book called “A Mapmaker’s Dream: The Meditations of Fra Mauro, Cartographer to the Court of Venice,” by James Cowan, 1996.  Very inspirational!

This is the BBC video about the exhibit.

This is something called “MapTube,” sort of the “YouTube” of Maps!

Road Kills

From Holly Porter-Morgan:

“Please send on to the group if you find it relevant.”

This one is about the guy who is mapping road kills on thousands of miles of roads.  OK, now for those of you who have taken my fall class in environmental modeling and spatial analysis, you may remember one of the papers I tortured you with (oops!  I mean one of the scintillating papers you very willingly read and re-read multiple times) about the mitigation of highway road kills in the Canadian Rockies, and how the favorite paths of the various focal species were estimated by aspect, slope, etc., (remember “expected” versus “observed”?).  It seems this poor fellow doing this incredible road kill ground truthing work could benefit from parts of their approach.

And, lastly, Katie Gill sent me this just tonight, which relates, by coincidence, to the same type of highway mitigation project.  In fact, one of the species they are most concerned about in this project, the lynx, was one of the focal species from the Canadian Rockies highway mitigation project.
